Platform Shoes: The Height of Fashion

Platform shoes have been around much longer than we thought and today, they’re back in the fashion scene with a vengeance! Yes, platform shoes are the ‘it’ shoes of the present. From luxury brand labels in the likes Gucci, Christian Dior, Prada, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik to the cheaper alternatives such as Payless shoes, the platform shoe designs come by the hundreds.
Wedge platforms are characterized by the-heel-is-higher-than-toe proportion, solid platforms are those that have have foot-stool-lik heels, platform soles have solid high heel with a platform base at the ball of the foot and hidden platforms are those whose leather stretches from the body of the shoe right over the base with no visible seam.
Back in the 1400’s, platforms were designed to help the women of Europe and Asia keep their feet unsoiled as they walked through mud on the streets. The 1930’s proved to be a year of platform comeback, using cork rather than rubber as the turbulent war era prompted women to find consolation in ’standing above the times’. The 60’s and 70’s saw the disco era, this time the platforms were not only for women but for the men too!
