When it comes to wristwatches, Officine Panerai offers quality like no other. Their high-end watches are so much in demand that there’s always a waiting list for the latest models and each watch costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. What probably contributes to this prestige is the fact that the company produces only a limited number of watches a year. The company is also renowned for perfecting the world’s first wristwatch usable underwater. They have been imitated by countless of watchmakes but none can truly compare to the original. There are a number of devoted Panerai watch collectors around the globe, simply known as “Paneristi”. Coming out soon is a book to be published by Flammarion entitled “Panerai” –a volume which chronicles the fascinating history of the chronographs.
During its early days, Officine Panerai collaborated with the Royal Italian Navy or Marina Militare, supplying them with optivcal and mechanical instruments. In 1936, the demands of the navy led to the development of Panerai’s distinctive oversized, waterproof, luminous underwater watches that cemented the company’s name in history as one of the world’s best watchmakers.
